Peter Walke is the Deputy Secretary of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources. He was appointed to the position in January 2017 by Secretary Julie Moore, stepping down from his post as Chief of Staff for the Department of Environmental Conservation in neighboring New York State.

Deputy Secretary Walke attended university in Massachusetts and received a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Williams College. He also holds a Masters of Arts in Applied Geography from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Following completion of his undergraduate degree, Walke joined the Navy and served for nine years as an intelligence officer. During his time in the U.S. Armed Forces, he was stationed in Pensacola, FL; Virginia Beach, VA: England; and Colorado Springs, CO. He deployed twice in support of counterterrorism operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Upon resigning his commission, Walke was invited to participate in a leadership development fellowship serving the Governor of the State of New York. He promptly became one of the Governor’s primary environmental advisors, and was named Chief of Staff of the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. After more than two decades living in other states and abroad, Walke was excited to return to his hometown of Montpelier, Vermont to continue his work in environmental leadership at the Agency.

Walke lives in Montpelier with his two children, Everett and Regan. In his spare time, he enjoys playing with his kids, being outdoors, and reading.
